In-Home Care Overview: Seniors Helping Seniors - Mahoning and Columbiana Counties, OH

Husband and wife team, Preston and Jeanette Hess, wanted to make a meaningful contribution to others during their own retirement. A series of events led them to Seniors Helping Seniors services.Seniors Helping Seniors home care matches seniors who want to help with seniors who need a little help. This peer-to-peer assistance allows seniors in need to receive care from someone to whom they can relate to and they can trust. At the same time, seniors who want to help are able to remain active in their community, and often form strong relationships with the seniors receiving care.

Jeanette and Preston know intimately how challenging it can be when parents need that extra support, especially when family members live far away. “When my mother began to require some extra assistance it made me aware that many families don’t have family members close by to give them the care they need.” said Jeanette. “We want to be that support for families who can benefit from the hand of someone close by, so they can feel confident and comfortable that their loved one is cared for in all the ways they need.” Both Jeanette and Preston are very active in their community. Jeanette was a Deacon and Elder at Poland Presbyterian Church, as well as a Sunday school teacher. She also volunteers her time with the Salvation Army Women’s Auxiliary, Operation Learning Community Program (an after school tutoring program), and Big Brothers and Sisters. She has volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Community Bible Study, and the Poland Interfaith Food Pantry.

Preston has also served as a Deacon at their church, as well as a Sunday school teacher. He has served as an Advisory Board member of Operation Learning Community Program and has tutored there as well and taught at Owens Community College. He has also volunteered with Meals on Wheels, Habitat for Humanity and served in several positions in the Poland Interfaith Food Pantry.

“We love our community, and have always looked for ways to give back,” shared Preston. “Seniors Helping Seniors home care gives seniors in need a solid, caring support system that they can trust and, at the same time, helps seniors by giving them meaningful work.”

Seniors Helping Seniors in-home services has sites throughout the U.S. The organization was founded by Kiran Yocom, who has a mission and a passion to help seniors live independently. She leads the organization through compassion and caring for all.
