My husband is bi-polar and was diagnosed with Alzheimer's last May. I would like to place him in a study that is researching both Alzheimer's and bi-polar. Is there a study group in the Midwest that is doing research on both of these issues at once?
Sounds like you are being diligent. While your first choice would be a research study on both diseases together, if you can't locate one, would you be willing to enroll your husband in research on one or the other? Even that may be hard to find, because having both conditions might make the finding inconclusive.
My husband participated in a study at the Abigail VanBuren Alzheimer's Disease Research Center in Rochester, run by the Mayo Clinic. My husband did not have ALZ -- he had Lewy Body Dementia -- but the center does not limit itself to ALZ. He participated for 9+ years, and he donated his brain for further research. This was extremely meaningful to him. It seemed to him a contribution he could make for his grandchildren and others. Even though his memory was impaired he always reminded me when we traveled to "take the paperwork" in case he died while we were away.
I don't know who you contacted at Mayo, but if it wasn't this center you might want to try them. They are very much in touch with research going on world-wide, and they might have some leads for you.
I hope Dr. Douglas W. Sharre will have good information for you.
If you think it would be meaningful to your husband, I hope you can find some study for him to participate in. Perhaps "just" donating his brain or his body for research would give him a sense of purpose.
I've called the University where their are doing research, but was told that they were only taking people with Alzheimer's.The University didn't take people with both diseases. I asked if they new of any other study and they didn't have a recommendation. Alzheimer's runs in his side of the family. I am family historian and have gone back as far as the 1600's on his side. He's lost a little more memory of current events. Mayo clinic doesn't do both diseases. I want him in a program that will help him and help our daughter and our grandchildren to prevent this from happening to future generations. I've tried our local Alzheimer's Association, and nothing there. I have an address of Dr. Douglas W. Sharre, in Columbus, Ohio that I plan to call, who is studying Alzheimer's. Other than that, I'm not finding much else. Any help from anyone would be appreciated.
Where have you looked so far, Rocky? Have you tried the Alzheimer's Association in your area? Have you contacted Mayo Clinic? (They do a LOT of research studies.) Have you asked your husband's doctor? I hope you find something. That can be a great contribution!
