I have called several lawyers in Washington DC seeking guardianship for my mother. Some have not returned my calls, others took messages and said they would return my call. I also spoke to AARP Legal in DC. I've downloaded the forms, but I have so many questions.

If it’s a pretty straightforward case, you can file for guardianship yourself in probate court. An attorney can make the process easier, so I would just keep calling attorneys until you find to help you.

- Check the National Academy of of Elder Law Attorneys
- Findlaw.com (and then look for elder law and estate planning) Make sure that their caseload is mostly elder law (some list their percentages).

You can find a certified elder law attorney at www.nelf.org.

Because elder law is their specialty I have found that they are not as expensive as an attorney that has to do research to properly represent their clients. And most of them offer free consultations.

Good luck. Such a difficult journey.
