I have tried the SAS and other "orthopedic" brands...but they really do not offer much support. Also, Mom needs wider widths that most stores do not carry.

Have you found good walking shoes that are comfortable? If you found them online, I would appreciate the website.

Thanks...Lilli

Ive gotten my mom aturdy mary jane type shoes with velco closures at LL Bean and Lands End via mail order. My mom won't wear gym type shoes; she says they make her feet bump together.

Propet makes a very nice line of special need shoes. Even some with expandable leather sides. I found them reasonably priced with excellent customer service at Planetshoes.com

tiger and jeanne: thank you ...looks like New Balance may be it! I have been to so many stores for her. Strangely, Walmart carries shoes that are wider in the toes, but they do not have much support and wear out fast. But at least she has something to wear for now.
I will look into the New Balance and have her talk to her Podiatrist about inserts.

I buy my shoes out of a catalog at an orthodics place, and have a custom-made insert. The "gym shoe" style I get is New Balance. I notice that is what my podiatrist wears, too. (His mother wants to know when he is going to start wearing real doctor shoes.)

My mom doesn't need special shoes but I do and I buy mine from Zappos. I buy the New Balance 1123. It has a deep toe box and easily allows for an orthotic.
They look kind of funky but they are great for supinators.

When I took her to the doctor today for that toe, she was wearing her old shoes. I found the new ones in the plastic bag her newspaper comes in, behind her chair. What the heck?? I threw out the old one so that wouldn't happen again. She has NO recollection of putting them there of course. ha

Isn't that the truth...if you waited too long and let the toe get infected, they would ask you why you didn't come in sooner. All Mom's docs reminded her about foot care. That's why I am trying to find a good pair of shoes for her. She has the added problem of swelling...then, nothing fits so I bought her opened back shoes...which her PTs hate, but if she didn't have those, she would have to go barefooted!

I should add that the stupid blister is making it painful to walk and her toe is red and swollen. I was afraid someone was going to think I'm a overprotective weirdo that shlepping her mother-in-law to the doctor for a hangnail. ha

My mother-in-law has Kaiser insurance & along with Medicare, she is given one pair of new shoes a year and 4 pair of inserts. I take her to Crary Shoes here in our area where they special make them for her. In fact I'm taking her there tomorrow to have them adjusted because she's sliding forward and causing her toe to rub making a blister. She walks like Frankenstein because of her lack of eyesight added with some neuropathy so they're gonna fix it. I'll also be taking her to her doctor today to have that checked out cause I know that a simple infection in an old person could possible kill them.
