He has very mild Alzheimer's and always wanders off during the day while I'm working in my office or out of the house. He never gets into much trouble, just kind of meanders around town and talks to people and they usually notify me if they see him, but I want to know exactly when he leaves the house so I have a chance to steer him back onto our property. Any help would be appreciated!

You can buy a security system that will notify you on your cellphone if the doors are opened or whatever else you have hooked up to it. One at Lowes is called Iris Smart Home Management. You don't have to have it monitored if you don't want to.

I don't sell it, but relatives have it and love it. Look into it, and there may be others out there that do the same thing.

Other than that, I don't know what to tell you. Good thing he's well known.

Check out Project Lifesaver. It is a radio beacon that can be used to find lost Alzheimer's sufferers.

Check with your PD and see if they have an ankle GPS he can wear.

I understand that you can attach to his shoe a type of tracking system. I've seen it advertised for children on tv. Here is a link to kids but maybe it'll give you some help about adults. google/search?q=tracking+system+for+children&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&gws_rd=ssl

I'm so sorry to hear of this happening, I can't begin to imagine how stressful this is, every time it happens. I hope your town members are helpful, they sound like it if they are calling you. I feel lucky my dad hasn't done this yet (but he does drive mom nuts). Please report back if you have found help with one of those suggestions already posted. I'm sending good warm thoughts your way, and your dad's too.

check w/monitors that have a clip on devise that you can track him on your computer when you need to IF he would wear it when he leaves or someone can place on him and make sure it is recharged all the time. around 35-40/month if it will work for your situation.

Electronic monitoring can help. He may just be bored. Have you tried involving him in activities to keep him distracted? Installing a security system or even a piazo buzzer that goes off when he opens the door would let you know right away. These attach to the door and when the connection is broken because he opens the door, the buzzer goes off. Also try to become aware of when he is most likely to wonder and try to schedule your work at a different time. You may have to install a deadbolt that uses a key to unlock it in order to protect him as this progresses. Then wear the key around your neck when you sleep.
