My MIL continues to decline mentally from her dementia. She continues to be more combative. She is convinced that my husband brings other women and children to her apartment. She goes to a county run senior day program. One of the employees told my husband today that they won't be able to keep her much longer as she wanders to different areas of the building. My MIL has NO doctor as she is from another country and doesn't believe in them. She has no POA and will not appoint my husband (her only child) as she doesn't trust him. She's constantly losing debit cards and replacing them. There was an agreement that my husband would keep the card but she's accused him of things and has canceled and reordered cards. Thank you.

Call APS. It’s probably good that she has no POA . You never want to be POA for someone this uncooperative . A state guardian can be assigned .

A possible fly in the ointment is if she is not a citizen. I don’t know how that would work ….. for Medicaid and placement in a facility . I have no knowledge regarding non citizens .

Hi again, Lavida.
Things aren't better. I am sorry. But as we know dementia and aging we do know that there is little that will make them better.

Sure do wish I had a clue what might make this better for you; but, sadly, I don't. Hope that others do and I sure do sympathize and wish you the best.

Is MIL living alone?
If so you can make a call to APS and report a "vulnerable senior". If they determine that she is at risk they can court order a Guardian to make decisions for her. This could be your husband or a Court appointed Guardian.

She will continue to decline, she will get more combative, she will wander, and may wander away from her home is she is not watched 24/7.
You can not get someone with dementia to "agree" to something. They will not recall any agreement. She should not have access to her financial accounts.
