My father requires Memory Care now. He has Blue Cross/Blue Shield and Medicair/Medicaid for insurance. Does all of his savings, SS, retirement and 401K have to be exhausted before these kick in and help pay? Not sure how the process works. The new facility I just moved him to costs $4800 month.

So, Test depth, on your other thread, we suggested that you see an Eldercare attorney. Have you followed that advice? Frequent flyer laid out the process...

You say your dad has Medicaid. That is different from Medicare. Medicaid is a program for indigent people with less that 2k in countable assets and generally under 2k in income per month.

Not all Memory Care facilities accept Medicaid.

I agree with BarbBrooklyn. The best thing I have done for my mom is getting her an elder care attorney. It's expensive but worth it.

Did not see the other answer and I'll look to see if there are any elder care attorneys around this area.

Does the memory care place where your father is have a social worker who can help you with this? It does sound like there are funds to spend down in order for him to qualify for medicaid. Also, see an elder care attorney.

If Dad has a 401K I would say this money will need to be used for his care. This includes cashing in life insurance policies. Funny your Dad gets Medicaid or are you confused. Is his Blue Cross Medicaid? Is his 401k being considered his pension and he is drawing from it? I agree, maybe a lawyer who knows Medicaid can help. Medicaid allows Dad's money to be used for this.
