Have you checked into an Adult Foster Care situation? We have many of them here in Oregon. It's more one on one care, less expensive and much more homey. Ask around.

There is no "best" for all cases. One size does not fit all when it comes to dementia. What stage is the person in? What are the primary symptoms? Are there aggressive or disruption behaviors? What is the home situation like? Who would do the caring at home? Lots of factors go into the decision of what is best, and it is on a case-by-case basis.

Julie~We recently move our mother (Alzheimer's) to Prestige Senior Living in California. We looked at several Assisted living communities in our city and decided on them because we were very impressed with the Expressions program and our mother has a private one bedroom apartment plus she can have have her dog living with her. It has only been 3 weeks but so far we have no complaints. While no community is perfect, we do everything we can to let them know we appreciate all that they can do to make our mother comfortable within reason. Many people I have talked to within our city have all good things to say about them. We can have breakfast, lunch, dinner with mom for a fee. It is $7 for breakfast and $10 for lunch and dinner. I have not been disappointed with their food. They have treated my mother very well. Mom is involved in the Expressions program from 8:30-6 daily. It is a long day for her, but I know she enjoys the social aspect of it even though she does not think there is anything wrong with her. Her biggest complaint is being separated from her dog all day and she does not understand that her LTC policy is paying for it so she is worried she will go broke. As with any community, remember to really be reasonable in your expectations of what they can actually do. We were told they would walk her dog every two hours while she is in Expressions. The reality is they walk her in the morning, once in the afternoon, and again when mom is returned to her apartment in the evening. Since the dog is adjusting...no messing in the apartment, I chose not to make a battle of this because mom's care is foremost. Read between the lines on what they tell you, visit unannounced before you make a decision at all the places you are considering after you have taken the tour. This community has many activities for those living in AL...movies, bingo, shopping trips and others. A library, computer room, exercise room, laundry room for those who can do their own laundry. I work and must continue to work to pay my bills and plan for my future so taking care of my mom 24/7 is not an option. Because my mom can live in the AL side, we do her laundry there once a week when visiting her, plus I visit her more than once a week. I take her out of memory care program, we have lunch, take a walk with her dog around the neighborhood and visit in her apartment. This wednesday, I am taking her to a dr. appt. I can have them to that for me but I choose to do it myself. In her apartment, she has a refrigerator and microwave so we do keep her supplied with cereal, milk, fruit, coffee and all her personal needs for bathing and hygiene. She has a telephone, tv and all her own furniture. My mother is mentally incapacitated but is still somewhat independent and they work within that so she can live in the AL side plus she is not a wander risk at this point.
I hope this helps you and if you have any other concerns, ask me...I may not have the answer but I can suggest some ideas. Hugs to you!!

I would live there, if I were older, had the money and didn't want the upkeep of a house.
