Since Medicaid needs to be applied for and approved- including a lengthy "look back" period to determine need - its best to keep any other insurance in place during the interim.

Don't cancel anything at all. Once on Medicaid, it will pick up where Medicare leaves off, but both will still be needed and stay in force.

My mother passed away in July of last year, and I'm still receiving an occasional statement from Medicare for something they covered during her last days.
