My elderly father has lived with us for the past (approx) 6 yrs. His health is failing Dr suggested skilled care & possible nursing home later! I am on his joint ck acct and his truck title.  He will no longer be able to drive! Also, how much "gifting" can be allowed to family members? Obviously and unfortunate - I'm talking about "hiding" assets so NURSING home costs don't eat up the remaining funds! ANY suggestions?

Yes I have suggestions. You can't hide assets. Illinois has a 5 year look back for Medicaid applications. Don't know where you live so I don't know how far they look back. No gifting. Closing checking account will show up in a paper trail. I'm amazed at people who try to hide money so nursing home costs don't "eat up the remaining funds." In other words just let the state pay for it which means all the taxpayers. His money is for his care, not gifts to the family.

You cannot hide assets as State Medicaid will do a paper trail. Thus would be fraud. Plus it is not fair to us taxpayers for you to hide money and have us pay for your father's care. Please note "gifting" to family members would throw a wrench into any type of Medicare care your Dad would receive.

The best thing to do is have your father apply and be approved by Medicaid, then that way Medicaid will help pay for any nursing home care for the rest of your father's life.
