I was trying to do some "deep cleaning" at my father's house yesterday. He has moderate dementia, NPD, etc.

Anyhow, I have been trying to replace a totally wrecked screen door for years. The wind has caught it SO many times that hardly closed any more. The screen no longer stay on. It once had nice metal curly ornaments on the front. We got in so many arguments over this dumb door.

I so badly wish I could post a photo of this door. I think it would give you a healthy belly laugh. First, there are "pop rivits" all over, then bolts and washers, then a circle of a pop can and a little piece of wire, then a layer of "gorilla glue", then a layer of "JB Weld" and finally many many pieces of DUCT TAPE on top of the glued places!!!

I got a drill and a crow bar and got that stinking thing off of there! Best therapy for me......now a trip to the hardware store.....whistling a happy tune! Have a great day everybody!!

I've learned how to pick my battles with Dad. To him everything was just cleaned, fixed, delivered or bought "Just the other day". He used to be a skilled craftsman but now I find outrageous fixes of paint, glue, duct tape and tie wire around the house. If I say we need to clean the carpets he says he'll get the carpet machine out of the garage. My mom gives me a painful look, as this could be disaster. I diverted
Him with a Little Debbie (Yum.....). Went out to the garage, and "Fixed" the carpet cleaner. But he forgot all about it anyway. We always keep lots of Little Debbie's around.

Duct tape. The handy mans secret weapon! There are some hilarious web sites with pictures af DIY disasters. I'm a retired electrician and all round handy man (at least I like to think so) and I have a couple duct tape fixes around my place that I've been meaning to correct for years.

Are you sure it wasn't Red Green fixing that door?

If one isn't familiar with Red Green Show, it's a Canadian comedy that once was shown on BBS here in the States. So very funny.... it only appeals to those of us who like to do our own fixing-up. Red can come up with the most clever things just from using stuff in his workshop.

Oh come on freqflyer, Red Green says "if you can't be handsome at least you can be handy" :)
Rivets and duct tape? Sounds like it would work for another of our shows, Canada's Worst Handyman! LOL

Windy, I was chuckling about your comment about your father's refusal to have the carpets cleaned. What is it that cleaning is such a battle!!! I fought for 5, count them 5 years and finally got them done under huge protest and I had to pay for it myself. After that he would not wipe the mud off his feet! I guess he showed me...haha

I am still scraping Gorilla Glue off of floors, counter tops, window sills. I think you should have to pass a test to use that stuff...like the add says...it holds the world together!

My father was also a "Mr. Fix It" Nuts and bolts and wire were his favorite. His father was the same way. Most of his fixes actually worked. Looked atrocious, but worked. Would loved to have seen a picture of your fathers screen door.

On the not so humorous side note.. my FIL was Mr Fixit,, and now that the house is for sale,, we are having to "fix"his fixits.. didn't pass home inspection! Electic outlets wired wrong. Windows that don;t work correctly.. you name it! His cheap fixes worked fine for then. but are rebounding now on us! Oh well!

My Dad was always Mr. Fix-it and Mr. Wizard rolled into one. Always inventing this or that. Sadly as he aged his ability to fix anything took a back seat, even thought he would try. Now, if only he would leave Mom's hearing aids alone, pieces shouldn't be missing :(
