My boyfriend's father is 88 and lives out of state. Most of his family is here. He falls quite frequently and his memory is fading quickly. He is now in the hospital due to a recent fall and will then go to a rehabilitation facility for a week or two. All family members have tried to convince him to come and live either with of us or in a facility of his choice. He refuses. We tried having someone go to his house and check on him, bring meals, help him bathe, etc. When we tried to find someone to stay with him 24/7, he refused. Help, please! Can he be forced to leave his home?

I think you would need to be his guardian as well. Contact the agency on aging in your area and his. They should be able to give you some good advice. I'm sure you will be hearing from others who have much more knowledge about what to do who will be able to help. Stay strong!

About the only thing that can be done by force is that you request a welfare check from Social Services. If they determine that he is unsafe, they might be able to force a move. It's truly sad, but sometimes families have no choice but to wait for something serious to happen. Keep us posted if you find a solution.
Take care,
Carol
