A portable toilet is already in the bedroom. Mother struggles to get to it, in a timely manner, at night. We haven't had a problem during the day so far. Can't shampoo carpet everyday.

First, does your Mom wear any type of Depends? If not, she needs to do that.

My Mom had issues with my Dad because he refused to wear Depends. Eventually she got tired of cleaning the carpet... mine you, Mom was in her mid-90's down on her hands and knees using Resolve carpet cleaning spray, a brush, and rag. After doing this over a dozen times, she finally handed Day the clearer and the brush and had him clean up the mess. After few times of doing that, Dad started to wear Depends :) Don't know if your Mom could do her own cleaning or not.

Anyway, my Mom used Resolve but I believe there are better cleaners on the market that work much better for urine smell. Might want to try the pet stores as they have urine-smell spray removers.

I know the large chain pet stores sell a urine product that works really well - can't recall the name but it's a white trigger bottle with red lettering. It's all natural - contains something that will keep a pet from returning to the same spot - wouldn't it be great if that worked on humans?!

Also - if it's not a trip hazard can you put down a large towel that might catch mis-directions?

I use a product (non-aerosol) called CitrusMagic-Orange made by Beaumont Products in Kennesaw GA to remove orders from the air. It does not mask odors, but removes them. I was introduced to it my hairdresser at the time that know I was sensitive to chemical fragrances. She bought it by the case and sold to customers who wanted some. There are many brands on the market, but CM is the only one I have found that doesn't contain phthalates. My local health food store now carries it and it sells quickly, so I buy two event though it lasts quite a while, as they often run out. There are a number of oil selections, but Orange is the only one that completely remove odors. They also make a carpet cleaner and other household products that I have never used. Google for info. Ads at side says their products are available at Wal-Mart. Another method for reducing urine odors that I learned while caregiving for those using portable bedside potties was to keep about three inches of water with small amount of bleach in bucket that dilutes the urine and reduces strength making it possible to wait until morning to empty the container. This also creates less commotion in middle of night allowing the caree or LO the ability to go back to sleep more easily. Hope this is helpful!

I dont have this issue with my parents...yet. But i do have an elderly dog that has occasional accidents on the carpet. I use Natures miracle sold at pet stores and it costs from 18 to 25 a gallon. You clean up as much urine as you can then pour this enzymes stuff..enough to get to the underpadding of the carpet..so you need more then the actual urine. Then let dry...it may still have a smell until it is completely dry.

I have read that bleach and urine can form a very toxic gas..not sure if that is true or not but i remember reading that.

That sounds familar - I'm pretty sure Natures Miracle is what I was talking about. My son occasional has accidents that leak onto the couch and this is the best product I've found. I bought it for my dogs but tried it on my sons accident and it worked great.

All of information I can find on net about urine and bleach is anecdotal (incidents, stories) and not scientific. Information says that ammonia and bleach are dangerous, so if urine is not fresh and broken down could be a concern. Also given is detailed information on how to use urine and bleach as a pregnancy test. If that is case adding a small amount of the CitrusMagic Orange household cleaner could be used in the commode bucket rather than bleach. The non-aerosol spray that they offer instantly removes garlic, fish, smoke, bathroom odors with one spray instantly. Sprays with chemicals (including phthalates) give me an instant headache that lasts for hours, so can highly recommend. They also offer pet care products. Also leaves house smelling great!
