My mother is in a nursing home and is immobile. She wears diapers and has had numerous UTI's. She has been bleeding vaginally. What could be the cause?

Another thought, I remember now that you can have some bleeding with bladder infection, I used to get them when I was younger and this happened. Also, if mom is incontinent, she could have a rash and chaffing, and itch the area and it could bleed. Just simpler reasons than thinking cancer.

Past experience with an elder was a Fistula. Wishing her well!

Unfortunately she should also be evaluated for cancer. Take her to a gynecologist. If she is not able to be moved, talk to the internist for the NH and s/he can have her evaluated. It could be something as simple as fibroids, but any vaginal bleeding after menopause has to be evaluated for cancer.

She will need a complete internal exam to find out if this is infection and what type. It would help to know if she has had a history of fibroids, ovarian cysts or abnormal pap smears or a hysterectomy in the past.
