How to talk to 97 year old dad about memory care placement due to funds running out? Has been living at home for past 15 years. He does not want to go.

Does he live at home or in assisted living? Have they told you that his needs are exceeding their capability to care for him?

As someone else stated, if he is out of money, he will need to go to long term care that accepts Medicaid.

If he needs MC, then assisted living can not handle his needs. So....they never want to move. Keep the explanation short and sweet and firm. And don't talk about it much until the time is very close. Why prolong the worry on his part?

You probably are not, but please don't spend your own money on this. Unless, of course, you are a multi-millionaire!

If funds are running out, how do u think ur going to pay for memory care. These facilities are private pay. Medicaid usually doesn't pay for them only Longterm care. You need to check with ur State's Medicaid to see if they will. My State of NJ will only pay if you have paid privately for at least 2 yrs.

Assuming you have POA over his healthcare and financial decisions you can make the change. Discuss as little as possible, take him to the new place for a meal, and arrange for the move. Talk to the director of the MC place and ask for their advice on moving
