they keep crossing over to the f=defunct one in a lot of cases. Yesterday, A nice lady at the defunct insurance (UHC) to send me an official letter saying my benefits are exhausted. Said I could send it to Medicare and it would hopefully help.


That sounded too vague for my comfort.


What should I do next?

I understand the defunct. I know a number of employers, when you retire, that have a maximum that their health insurance will cover. When its gone, its gone. My Uncle lost his at the age of 70.

So, you now have a new secondary insurance? And you notified Medicare? Then you may have to call and notify them again. That letter will come in handy to show you no longer have insurance with the defunct insurance. Ask the person who answers the phone what you need to do to have them make the change in their system. But I really don't think Medicare cares what secondary you have.

People change secondary insurers all the time. I changed my Moms and never called Medicare about the change. Are you sure one of your doctor's or even the hospital you go to all the time doesn't have your old info on file. Because thats how it works. Medicare is billed first, when the Drs office gets that info, they bill the secondary insurance which then bases their payment on what Medicare covered. You may want to check that out. What Dr. was turned down for payment because they billed your old insurer? That Dr. should be billing you saying the insurer would not pay for lack of coverage. Then that is who you call to update your billing info.
