I just found out my client has been skimming her caregiver money and charging me $350 a week for rent. it slipped out when I asked for a raise. she said you already make minimum wage and I take some for rent. she is often confused or maybe its her way of deflecting my questions. I worked the numbers & am sick. she's been robbing me blind and spending like a drunken sailor. how much would've been fair for a basement room ?

No, no and no! Live in caregivers in my area make $4,000-$5,000 a month with room and board included.

I worked for an affluent wealthy family for almost 7 years/ full time as their private caregiver - The last 1.5 years of also taking care of their dying elderly father - They started charging me $550 every month for a basement room-as I became their full time Live-In Caregiver. FYI - NEVER exchange your time, efforts and mental disposition for a "Room" in exchange for caring for another's loved one - It's "NOT RIGHT" or ethical in anyway for someone to use you and your goodness, kindness - While the rest of the family could care less to boot! and you become the do all person. Hard lesson learned!

pollyanna, I would say it is time to look for another client. You are being underpaid and overcharged. Shame on your boss!

Is it a long term care policy that is paying her to pay you? Nope, rent should not be deducted from that, I think, in this case, they call that insurance fraud.

Room and board should never be charged for live-in help. Especially for someone taking care of the elderly. In my area room and board are always included. Most also include health insurance, annual vacation and two days off each week. If there is additional time over 40 hours there is over time paid. Salary paid is as Glad said $4000 a month. If someone is paying for round the clock care it can easily run $12,000 a month. I live in a university town where students are routinely overcharged on rent, but not $550.00 a week for a basement room. That's horrible.

Skimming? Who is giving her the money? If this is from the government, report her to agency that is paying support. If the money is from family, call them.
Hopefully you have a written agreement and she signed it.

Yes, I have now started my own Agency after getting WORKED over by this family - In which I provided the utmost quality of care for the "Patriarch" of the family and community who knew him. He loved me too., and wanted me there - The lessons learned have been life changing as I go forward in my own life of aging and wellness - Families can be mean and ignorant in their quest for elder care. It is important to have a good agency with Management who knows how to talk to families about live-in Caregivers.
