My 76 y/o dad has Alzheimers and has lived in MC for 17mos. I am his guardian. He is physically fit. The staff says he refuses to allow the staff to clean his room and do his laundry. I have met with our Ombudsman and the staff and told them this is their contracted responsibility. Today I received a phone call from the administrative person asking if I could pick him up and take him out so they could clean his room and launder his bedding. The staff says he refuses meds or allowing them to take his vitals and will not let them go in his room. He gets angry and violent. We live in WI and I have been told they can not force medication even though he definitely needs behavioral meds. He is extremely difficult and obviously if I could make him do what I want he would live in my home.

Can’t they take him to an activity or clean his room when he’s in the dining room ?
This is what they usually do for those like your Dad .

Add on .

If he gets “ angry and violent “ , you can’t drive in the car with him , it’s dangerous , he could grab the steering wheel .

I agree with Joann that if they can’t figure out how to deal with him then he goes to SNF .

By law, they cannot force Dad to do anything he does not want to. But, as MC unit, they should know the tricks to get him to do what he wants. Get him out to the common area so they can clean his room. Why do need to come and get him. They should find ways of getting his pills in him. Its to their benefit.

To me, MC is just a step up from AL care. Its not skilled nursing. The resident needs to be fairly easy to care for. Any aggression problems medicaid for. You Dad, in his anger could seriously hurt someone. I think your Dad needs LTC. He is beyond the ability of a MC to care for him.

If he won't allow laundry and housekeeping it seems unlikely that he is leaving his room for meals or will cooperate with attending to personal hygiene either, given his violent tendencies I'm surprised they haven't evicted him already.

Thank you for your response. This facility advertises they are Alzheimers and dementia specialists. If they are not equipped to care for my dad, I'm not sure who is. He does spend most of his day in the common area, eats all meals with the other residents at the tables. He likes to watch tv, go for walks around the property (my husband and I take him outside to walk each time we see him). And if they allow the residents to sit on the gated patio area he is in heaven. The facility has the opportunity to distract him.
How can someone go into SNF when they have no physical ailments?

Thanks for the response yungstdaughter, it begs the question - why can't they clean the room and remove his laundry when he is out taking part in other activities?

Could be that they are wanting to inconvenience the family , so the family will take the initiative to move Dad to another facilty . The facility may be concerned because “ He gets angry and violent “.
