Recently for dental care which she hasn't had in two years. Help! She has vascular dementia and severe bilateral knee arthritis which makes it painful for her walk. She starts whining the minute she gets out of bed and it is enough to send me through the roof. She does live with me and I mostly just try to encourage her as arguing or rationalizing gets me nowhere. But I really don't know what to do to get her to these appointments that she needs without ordering her and making her cry.

I've read on the forums where some adult caregivers would bribe their parent... such as after the doctor appointment we will stop for ice cream, etc.

With my parents, I had the opposite problem, they were more than happy to go to a medical appointment... I had at least 30 in one year. I was the one who was whining and ready to cry :P

Can you get a transport wheelchair ? My 93 year old mom who has had many bad falls can still walk short distances inside with a walker but it's too hard on her to go from car to parking lot to inside a building - any outing to a medical provider also includes a treat afterwards - lunch, pie and coffee etc
If I can get a Tylenol in her ahead of time then I'll do so

No one likes doing any of these things but she has had the same care providers for many years with the exception of the neuro which is new and which she doesn't like - she thinks they're trying to make her look foolish with their questions so I don't give her much information as to who where and why

We go to the dentist regularly and I sit with her while she's having her cleaning - at some point she may not cooperate but she hasn't bitten anyone yet

Biggest hassle is ,er ely getting her ready on time to make the appointment and her constant need to use the bathroom so planning enough time to use the potty upon arriving anywhere helps

Thank you...i do give her pain meds ahead of time and use a transport chair when i can but hadnt thought about bribery! That will probably help. She loves ice cream so I bet she'll enjoy going if she can get that treat afterward. Great idea!!
