There are many alternatives. Depends is an excellent product. Check at your Walgreen or CVS pharmacy. If she cannot afford them, it's time to contact Medicaid.

I believe Medicare can pay for adult diapers if they are needed during a health professionals visit but not on a regular everyday basis. It is an expense that millions of adults have to include in their daily budgets. It can work out economically to your benefit to research and purchase washable reusable adult diaper pants as well as folding a washcloth in thirds and using that as a booster pad. Collect the soiled cloth diapers, boosters, and flocked vinyl chair/bed pads in a pail with 10% bleach solution and wash daily. This is much cheaper than disposables (which cost about 95 cents each and you need about 10-12 per day). Also use cloth wipes -- we purchased 20 or 24 washcloths from Sam's Club for only about $10, and they last for a year. Keep all these supplies by the toilet your senior uses. For road trips you can bring zip lock freezer bags and collect the soiled diapers very easily. It is not much different than a toddler in cloth training paints. I bet most caregivers here grew up with cloth diapers as well as cloth training pants and any bed wetters had flocked vinyl or rubber sheet sections on their beds. If you can't afford disposable diapers you have no choice but washable cloth ones.....there is no government program to provide them and I doubt Congress has a bill to do it.

i searched for adult diapers for women and adult incontinence: many sources popped up. yourdiaperscom offers different styles free ship for $40 - you may contact any of the suppliers and ask for samples before purchasing in bulk. Most of the larger distribution co's offer many brands and can send you a sample of anything you wish to have your mom try. That way you'll know whether it's easier/more comfy to use briefs pullups or paper tabs. Absorbency varies, too. You may wish to consider a plastic sheet w/ a quilted top to protect the mattress. i just happened to note the product on one of supplier's pages. Best to you ~

My understanding is that whether or not Medicaid covers the cost of adult diapers varies from State to State. Some will cover the cost but only if the person is in a facility. Medicare does not cover the cost.
