My 95 year old mother-in-law lives with us. I've tried to find someone to help mom with her shower once a week. All of the agencies I've talked with say that there would be a minimum of 3 hrs. to pay for. It doesn't take 3 hours to help a 4' 8" woman take a shower, but, the agencies say that the aid could clean moms room or make her meals or give her meds etc. I do all of these things for her, however, I'm a senior citizen myself with arthritis in my upper back, hips and shoulders and I'm simply not able to do this for her anymore. Mom can get into the walk-in shower (which has a shower chair) and back to her walker with a little assistance. She can wash her upper body but needs help with her hair, legs, back and feet. We live in North Charlotte.

Once you go the professional/agency route, there will be a minimum number of hours with which to contend. Because you yourself are a senior citizen, why not accept the extra help and find something for the helper to do once she's done bathing your MIL?

I do not know of any agency that will take less than 3 hours. Your best bet is to ask people at your church or senior center if they know of someone. Personally I would take the three hours and have someone else do the mopping and dusting and change the beds.

Call Visiting Angels. The one we use has more flexibility in their hours than the other agencies we've used.

When I called Senior Helpers a year or two ago, they would do a one hour visit. Not sure if they have locations everywhere but they are in several states. Their hourly rate decreased as per visit hours increased (e.g. a one hour visit was about $28/hr but a 2 hr visit got billed at $25/hr or something like that.)

Does your mom qualify for home health services - maybe ask her doctor - an aide could come 2x a week to give mom a shower
