Hi guys, my grandmother is 82 and I'm 25. We have a pretty good relationship but because we live together, we both try to give each other space. I dont want to spend too much time away from her and let her think I'm neglecting her. She will get a little passive if I spend too much time away from home, but when I am home she is either reading a mystery or her Bible, playing word finds or watching tv. She HATES leaving the house and she needs a walker to get around. She's starting to lose strength in her fingers, too (if you have any suggestions about that let me know) but I honestly am stumped with ideas for her and i to spend quality time together,

To spend time together, we drink coffee, tea, and eat breakfast and dinner, sometimes I'll watch tv with her, but that is all we do. Please help.

When my mom did home health, the occupational therapist had her do exercises with thera putty. You can purchase it on Amazon. It’s not expensive.

Mom had Parkinson’s disease and thera putty helped her build up her strength. Try it.

Does she like puzzles? There are lots of nice puzzles at Hobby Lobby. They go on sale occasionally. You can order them online.

You could play cards with her if she likes card games. My mother loved to play solitaire at the kitchen table.

You might look into doing some crafts. Look on Pinterest for ideas.

Another thing that I love to do is to research our family history. You could start building your family tree.

Allow her to answer questions about your family history. You may even want to ask her to record some family stories.

Check to see if she has any records about your family in her Bible. Lots of people record important information in their Bibles.

Does she enjoy music. You could listen to gospel music together.

Best wishes to you and your grandmother.

Does she actually hate going out or does she hate the places she's being taken to? My mom and I used to just go for drives, sometimes we'd grab a coffee or lunch from the fast food drive through and eat in the car at the nearest park.

My LO’s hand orthopedist thinks it’s important for LO to be able to make a strong fist. He suggested making fists then relaxing the hands many times every day. This keeps the hands strong and fingers supple. If the time comes that LO can’t do this, hand therapy appointments will ensue. Hands are important for doing ADLs, for getting up if fallen down, etc. I suggest you do them with her a couple of times a day.

Play Boggle or Scrabble if she's into words. Can also do 'movie nights' sort of things where the two of you sit and watch something share-able.

My ancient Auntie (103) can still play card and board games like Golf, Warr, Rummy-Q, and Sequence. Ask your Grandma if she remembers any games she used to enjoy. War is the simplest card game that you can teach her.

If you have a laptop or tablet she can play digital games with you, or you can watch funny YouTube videos together (my other ancient Auntie loved the funny animal ones).

Music from the 50s should be where she was in high school. If you have cable TV, scroll to those music stations that have her approximate age. You might find her singing tunes from her past
