Bring two aides.

I'm sorry, I know that must sound facetious; but I am in fact serious. One aide to do the assisting, the other to reassure and explain to your wife why the first is there. You, meanwhile, sitting in another room with your feet up and a blissful half hour's peace, are out of sight and out of mind and therefore cannot be pushback target.

Would this be manageable for you? It slightly depends on how much in-home assistance you're hoping to bring in, of course.

Sometimes it helps to position the 'help' in a more subtle manner. when I first brought in a companion for my Mom, I introduced her as a friend and said we were helping her to get a job but she needed to help seniors for experience. Initially, I had her just do companion things til my Mom got used to her. I stayed there the first few times to ease the path. As the others are bringing up, what type of objections?

Push back from who, your wife or extended family? Either way you grow a very thick skin and learn to deflect or ignore it. There comes a point when we just have to accomplish what needs to be done regardless of the negative comments. Perhaps some meds to calm your wife on bath days would help.

Change your perspective. By bringing in help, you are taking care of yourself so that you can take care of your wife. Do not feel guilty about doing this for yourself! Do not explain yourself to anyone including your wife whose brain will not comprehend it. If you get tense or act nervous when the helper arrives, your wife may be picking up on your anxiety and the situation spirals downward. When the helper arrives, take some nice deep breaths and allow the helper to do his or her work while you go do something else. Depending on what kind of push back you are talking about, your wife may need a little medication to help calm her down.

GCMeyers, you tell her the doctor ordered the aide. Patients respect MD orders. They also respect the uniform. You leave the room and let the aide take charge. It wouldn't hurt for her to have some Ativan an hour before the aide gets there. Ask the MD.
