I am a 17 yr caregiver and my son, who has severe traumatic brain injury and PTSD, was just recently placed (thankfully, with financial help from the Wounded Warrior Project Continous Care Program) in a local assisted living facility, thankfully having his own studio apt. He has a platform bed with drawers, with an 8 in mattress. He currently has the Stander Brand EZ Adjust Bed Rail, Adjustable Senior Bed Rail and Bed Assist Grab Bar for Elderly Adults, that the VA approved 2007 for him, and is what he has on his bed now. The assisted living facility knew this, before approval for admission. Now after 7 days, they say they are not approved fo regulation. PLEASE ADVISE what is nationally approved. This particular facility wants me to buy The Stander Bed Cane, which I'm not sure can mount to his platform bed under the mattress, He is not able to use a 12 in mattress, on his platform bed, because his feet can't touch the floor, so I changed his mattress to a 8 in.

Would they "approve" the rails that are currently used IF a doctor wrote an order for them?
Having a Doctor write an order might make a difference.

You could ask if they would they approve a tension mounted pole like this one

...my mom had a similar one (the SuperPole with SuperBar™) and it's very sturdy.

You have to check with your son's AL directly to see what THEY approve in the way of bed rails, as most approve NONE.

Above is an FDA download from 2003, Clinical Guidance for the Assessment and Implementation of Bed Rails in Hospitals, Long Term Care Facilities, and Home Care Settings. It's old, and I'm not even sure if Assisted Living Facilities fall into one of those categories. And again, the AL your son is in has their own rules so it's likely a moot point anyway. You'll need to follow their guidelines or run the risk of him being asked to leave. Ask them what THEY recommend he use to accomplish his goals that would fit within their guidelines; I assume this is a private AL?

My parents were allowed no bed rails at all in AL but they did have a bed cane which didn't 'mount'.......it just slid under the mattress and sat between it and the box spring.

Best of luck.
