My 90 yr old Father was diagnosed with dementia on 7/28/21, medicated with 25mg Seroquel once daily. Now he has been switched over to the generic form, Quetiapine Fumarate 25mg. I believe this drug is hard on the elderly, and I am wondering what drugs he may need to ingest once this drug becomes ineffective?
* side note. Your dad is a Veteran. Please check with the VA you probably can be getting paid to care for him I think in addition to the caregiver that they will have come in.*
25 mgs is a "beginning" dose and should be adjusted upwards gradually.
Yes, it has a black box warning. As one ages, there are tough choices to make about treatment, quality of life and calculated risk.
Be in touch with the prescibing doctor to ask what the choices are and how s/he plans to manage your dad's symptoms.
A GREAT drug for severe anxiety and sleep. I take it daily. I don't want to do so forever and plan to wean off of it this year, but it has saved me from many sleepless nights as it works well for me. If you don't sleep, you don't function well.
Once this becomes inefective for him, there are MANY other drugs that will work. I've tried SO MANY sleep aids and this is the first one that really helped me.
But, any questions about drugs and interractions can be addressed to your pharmacist. They really know more about drugs than your dr does.
