I can no longer take care of him. I’m 72-years-old. He cannot take care of himself. He has $40.00 income and receives food stamps. I need some answers on what I can do. He can no longer live with me.

In the meantime ask your doctor for a referral for a social worker since you are stressed they Can become a good support system to have you Navigate through this crisis . Also If he Has a doctor and it would be wise if you both Have the same doctor . he should be On disability that way he can get Medicare .

There is a Youtube Channel, Empowering Ability by Eric Goll

Mr Goll covers several topics regarding disability which may be of interest and help to you and your son.

Did he get a denial letter, if so, was an appeal of the decision filed?

It can be rare to be approved on the first try.

Did you apply for SS disability or is it now in the hands of a SS Layer? With a SS kawyer you pay nothing until your son wins and then the percentage is taken out ofvthe Retro money.

Have you talked to Social Services about receiving Supplimental income until he is OKd For SSD? With Supplimental income he gets Medicaid too. Contact your County Dept of Disabilities. There may be resourses he in entitled to. He may need to apply for LTC Medicaid and be placed in Long-term care. Unless your State has group homes. You maybe able to get Medicaid for "in home" care.

Your income has nothing to do with services he can get. Its all based on his.

He may have applied, though I've heard that due to being severely understaffed it can take almost a year to get a decision.

Personal, mine took almost 2 years.

Please call APS. They will have some guidance for you. I would play up the "desperation card" and tell them your age, and that you can no longer care for your son. Ask them to come to your home. Be prepared to give them details about your son, his condition, his needs, and your own inability to function in his care now.

We need more information, but possibly he needs to be in a group home with other mentally disabled adults. You need to get in touch with social services and your local mental health agency. He needs to get evaluated by a DR. and Psychiatric nurse.
